The United States has now initiated military strikes against targets in Iran — a most serious and consequential decision authorized by President Trump.
Iran’s support for proxy forces across the region, along with its ongoing nuclear and ballistic missile programs, poses enduring security challenges for the United States and its partners. Drawing on our longstanding engagement on these issues, we recognize the gravity of this moment.
There is no doubt that Iran has pursued destabilizing actions in the Middle East. Truman supports American strength and the responsible use of force to defend vital U.S. interests. At the same time, decisions of this magnitude require a clearly articulated rationale, defined objectives, and an explanation of why diplomatic options are no longer viable. The administration should provide clear objectives, scope, and intended end state for this action, and engage Congress consistent with constitutional authorities. Strategic clarity and constitutional accountability are not optional — they are foundational to sound national security and essential to preventing open-ended conflict.
With Iran’s retaliation already underway and tensions rising across the region, preventing further escalation and protecting U.S. personnel, partners, and civilians must be an immediate priority.
The use of force is never abstract. Service members and civilians are at risk, and early reporting of civilian casualties underscores that the human cost of war is always profound. Protecting civilian lives — regardless of nationality — must remain a priority in any military engagement. War carries irreversible consequences.
Strong defense depends on integrating military action with diplomacy, development, and democratic legitimacy.
We will continue to assess developments as they unfold.
