Timothy Strabbing
Originally from Hudsonville, Michigan, Tim Strabbing attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he majored in political science. As a midshipman, Tim rowed on the heavyweight crew team, served as the Brigade Commander, and was awarded a Marshall Scholarship. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps and attended Ranger School and Airborne School before heading to Oxford University, where he completed a Master’s Degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies.
After finishing his studies, Tim was assigned to 3d Battalion, 1st Marines as an infantry officer. He served for twelve months as a line platoon commander, deploying to Al Anbar, Iraq and taking part in the battle for Fallujah in November 2004. Reassigned as his company’s executive officer, Tim again deployed to Al Anbar, Iraq, completing the deployment as the battalion assistant operations officer. In July 2006, he reported to the Naval Academy as an instructor in the Political Science Department, teaching courses on U.S. government, American foreign policy, and irregular warfare.
Tim left active duty service in the summer of 2009 and accepted a civilian position as a political appointee in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict. In this capacity, he first specialized in formulating and implementing special operations and irregular warfare policy and is now the Department of Defense liaison to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, focusing on peacekeeping policy. Tim lives in New York City with his wife Jada.
