Stan Byers

Stanley Byers is a Director at the National Security Council, where he is the lead on economics and development issues for the Afghanistan-Pakistan Directorate, which manages the White House policy process for the two countries and advises the National Security Advisor and the President. Prior to this he served with USAID Afghanistan as the team leader of the Stabilization Tiger Team at the U.S. Embassy and as the development advisor for U.S. military Special Operations Forces.  Before returning to Afghanistan, Stan was Executive Director of the Global Fairness Initiative, a non-profit organization focused on creating economic opportunities for poor workers and producers to benefit from globalizing markets. As a volunteer with the Obama Campaign, Stan was co-leader of the foreign policy committee on Optimizing American Power. Previously, he has worked with the Dept of State Office of the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization (S/CRS) to help develop processes for strategic interagency coordination in response to conflict and crisis.  He also served as a USAID Field Officer on the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan, Afghanistan and with the USAID Office of Transition Initiatives in Southern Sudan. Stan was a Senior Manager of Kabul-based Altai Consulting, where he directed nationwide surveys on formal and informal private sector development and the dynamics of the media and information consumption in Afghan society. Other international experience includes an evaluation of participatory governance in the low-income communities of Belo Horizonte and Recife, Brazil and private sector consulting with On the Frontier in São Paulo. He holds a Bachelor in Biology/Ecology from Purdue University and a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.
