Michael Chase

Michael Chase is Associate Research Professor and Director of the Mahan Research Group at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. His current research focuses on China and Asia-Pacific security issues, including strategic deterrence and nuclear weapons policy issues, Taiwan’s security policy, Chinese military modernization, and Chinese nuclear and conventional missile force, space and counter-space, and cyber warfare developments. He is the author of numerous articles and chapters on Chinese foreign and security policy and Chinese military developments and of the book “Taiwan’s Security Policy: External Threats and Domestic Politics” (Lynne Rienner, 2008). Prior to joining the faculty at the Naval War College, he was a researcher with the Center for Intelligence Research and Analysis (CIRA) at Defense Group Inc. Before joining CIRA, he was an associate international policy analyst with the RAND Corporation. Michael received his Ph.D. in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC. He also holds an M.A. in China studies from SAIS and a B.A. in politics from Brandeis University. He is proficient in Chinese, and has studied in China and conducted field research in China and Taiwan.
