Mark Latonero
Mark Latonero is the
Research Director at the Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership &
Policy, University of Southern California. His research focuses on emerging
communication technology and social change. Mark’s recent work examines
technology and human rights and the use of social media by emergency
management. In September 2011, Mark released a major study on the role of the
Internet in human trafficking, which has led to developing tools for federal
law enforcement to monitor and disrupt trafficking. In January 2012, he begins
a two-year appointment to a National Academies committee to study the domestic
commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors. The study,
requested by U.S. Department of Justice, will inform future policy and
practices within law enforcement, human services, and health care agencies.
Mark has published in academic journals such as Information, Communication
& Society, Journal of Information
Systems for Crisis Response and Management,
and Communication Research. His
work has been covered by Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, Congressional
Quarterly, and CNN International. Mark received his Ph.D. from the USC
Annenberg School for Communication and was a postdoctoral research scholar at
the London School of Economics. He is a member of the Pacific Council on
International Policy.
