John Renehan is an associate deputy general counsel at the Department of Defense, where he works on Guantanamo Bay detainee issues.  He recently completed a term of service (2004-2008) as a captain in the U.S. Army's 3d Infantry Division.  During his 2007-2008 deployment he served as an Iraqi Police Transition Team leader in Ramadi, Iraq, overseeing the city's largest police station.  He has written on military issues in the Washington Post, The American Interest, City Journal, and elsewhere.  Prior to entering the military, he served as an assistant corporation counsel at the New York City Law Department, and as counsel to New York State's bioethics commission.  He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the U.C. Berkeley School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in History from U.C. Santa Barbara.  He is a native of Boston.
