Dr. David Callaway is the Director of The Operational Medicine Institute (OMI) at Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians and an Attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The OMI focuses on direct action medical mission on the edges of society, supporting humanitarians, law enforcement personnel, diplomats and the military. Dr. Callaway has extensive overseas experience in humanitarian, disaster and military medicine. He is a combat experienced physician who served as the Battalion Surgeon for 1st Radio Battalion, USMC and as a trauma surgeon for Alpha Surgical Company during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He continues to advise the Defense Health Board on the development and application of combat trauma techniques and equipment. In addition, he is a faculty member of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, conducting work in East Africa. Most recently, Dr. Callaway completed his Masters in Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and served as a Zuckerman Fellow at the Center for Public Leadership. He remains focused on the creative application of the medical model to diplomacy, human rights and national security.
