  • Your application will only be considered twice. If you have already applied for the Fellowship twice, please do not apply again. You cannot apply twice in a row.
  • You must live in one of the following nine Fellowship Chapters for at least the duration of one year from when you are accepted (i.e. January 2012-January 2013): Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Colorado, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, D.C.
  • If accepted, you are required to attend the 2012 Truman Security Conference in May and the Associate Fellows Orientation in January 2012. Please do not apply unless you know you can attend the full three-day conference, at your own expense (including transportation and housing).
  • If accepted, you are required to attend at least two-thirds of monthly Chapter meetings.
  • The Fellowship is a competitive young professionals program, therefore Fellows tend to be between the ages of 27 and 40; however, there is no official age requirement.
  • If selected for an interview, you must attend the interview.

First Year Fellowship Requirements
Please ensure that you can fulfill these requirements before you apply:

  • Attend at least two-thirds of monthly Chapter meetings in the first year;
  • Pay Fellowship dues and conference fee ($50.00) by May 1st;
  • Attend the Associate Fellows Orientation in January 2012 and the annual Truman Conference in May 2012 (both in Washington, DC);
  • Contribute, by forwarding Truman’s mission and principles, in one or more of the following ways:
    • Participate in media activities - speak in national and local mainstream media (not just academic journals), write in the media and/or,
    • Plan an event – coordinate one of the monthly chapter meetings (in close coordination with RDs), design a discussion, plan a field trip, etc. and/or,
    • Take an active role in an Affinity Group and/or,
    • Lead a training session, guided by headquarters – Lead a Bootcamp, Congressional Security Scholars session, etc.;
  • Washington Chapter: Plan Class Events (Only applicable to Washington Chapter because of size). As a class, arrange quarterly meetings for your class—not the entire Chapter. This requirement will not only allow Classes to build relations at intimate events, but will also encourage Classes to work together in order to execute planning;
    OR
  • All other Chapters except Washington, D.C.: Plan Chapter Events. As a class, arrange two local Chapter meetings during the first year;
  • Build Relationships:
    • Before the May conference, Headquarters will put each Fellow in touch with one existing Fellow and one new Fellow who will be in their Class.  Each new Fellow must meet with each of these people once prior to the conference (e.g. get coffee, attend event, lunch, etc.),
    • During the first year, new Fellows must arrange to meet/work with at least three Fellows and at least two Truman Political Partners on a one-on-one basis (e.g. get coffee, attend a non-Truman event together, co-author an op-ed, etc.);
  • Participate in Truman Fellowship Immersion Program.
