This combat veteran applauds the President
When I pulled into Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, for the Artillery Office Basic Course back in 2003, my New Hampshire license plate was an object of envy among my fellow greenhorn lieutenants. In a parking lot of plates trumpeting agricultural products and vacation destinations, only one sounded a call every American soldier feels in their bones: Live Free or Die. Maybe that helps explain why New Hampshire was always such a good place to come home to when I wore the uniform, through tough tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. We understand duty up here, and we've always supported those who serve.
Choosing our elected leaders wisely, especially our presidents, is a duty New Hampshire understands well: first in the nation, and rightly so. But it's worth remembering now, in this heady season of spotlight, that long after the last town hall is over and the election coverage has faded, our men and women in uniform will continue to serve under the commander in chief we choose.
Their volunteer service in our civilian-controlled military is an act of faith in every voter, especially those who lead the nation.
I don't agree with President Obama on every issue. But I do know that when it comes to keeping America safe and strong, and keeping faith with our veterans and military families, he has earned my trust and my vote.
