National Security SeminarsOur National Security Seminars offer selected Hill staffers, alumni of our leadership development programs, and members of the Truman community the chance for high-level dialogue and off-the record sessions with national security, military, and political experts. These Seminars provide deep background on the issues that matter, with polling and political messaging advice. Most of our seminars are off-the-record; those on-the-record can be viewed at: Seminar: Thursday, April 4, 6-7 pm Rep. Murphy was raised in a tough, but loving, blue collar neighborhood, grew out of a scrappy childhood to become a community college student and then an army officer, lawyer, and the youngest professor at West Point. He served in Iraq as a captain in the 82nd Airborne 'All-Americans' where he earned a Bronze Star for service, and successfully prosecuted one of Muqtada al-Sadr's top lieutenants. Returning from Iraq with a determination to help change the direction of this country, Murphy, a political novice, ran a grassroots campaign narrowly defeating freshman incumbent Mike Fitzpatrick in one of the nation’s most closely watched races in 2006. On-the-record seminars include: Larry Diamond, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, speaking on his new book, The Spirit of Democracy: The Struggle to Build Free Societies Throughout the World.
The Honorable Dr. Wendy Sherman, former General Counsel of the State Department and North Korea Policy Coordinator for the Clinton Administration, discusses North Korean and Iranian nuclear issues.
